I want to break down a quote from one of Melissa’s biggest influences, singer-songwriter and multi-talented artist Dodie Clark. I hope this breakdown influences her to keep pushing for her best life in the future.

“Be happy with you…”

Be happy with whoever you are in the present, and be grateful for whatever that present self sees in the future.

“…Love your flaws. Own your quirks…”

When you fail, don’t beat yourself up over it.

“…And know that you are just as perfect as anyone else, exactly as you are.”

You are you, no body else is like you. Be unique.

I don’t care how many times I say this, I want to make it completely clear that I love the future generation’s talents. They have a place in this world, much less have a place in this blog.

They are going after their dreams just as much or maybe more than my generation is.

So I guess what I am saying to Melissa and the rest of the generation is…

Keep going, keep listening, keep learning, and keep pushing yourselves.

Who is Melissa Joy?

Melissa is an 18-year-old singer-songwriter and producer from New York City. She recently debuted her newest EP Light Pollution on February 5th.

Some of Melissa’s biggest inspirations are Dodie (a personal favorite), the upcoming star Phoebe Bridgers, and Lizzie McAlpine.

Melissa says that her fan base has grown a lot since last year. “Because I hop genres often, I’m always afraid that people won’t like what they hear. But I always remind myself that as long as I am happy with it, someone else out there probably will be too,” she says.

Inspiration Behind Light Pollution

With light pollution, I really wanted to make music that you stare at the ceiling and kind of ‘zone out’ to. I also wanted to paint the picture of five completely different scenes through each song because I love to use imagery in lyrics.”

Ever since the release of the singles that are on the EP, Melissa has made a lot of talented and successful friends in the music industry. Networking is a big skill that she has learned to utilize.

The main influences (previously mentioned) helped Melissa make this happen when she needed it. “Most of their songs are sad, but they’re still beautiful. That’s what I want my music to do,” she says.

I personally continue to think the future musicians of the world like Melissa have such an amazing future and am ecstatic to see what they have in store.

Like Melissa, most have no idea where they are headed, but that’s a wonderful thing about creativity… You never know where you are going until you get there.

What’s Next for Melissa Joy?

Without having any intention of actually going somewhere with her music, Melissa has no actual idea of where she is headed next. If anything there will be a lot of genre hopping and collaborations.
