Maggie Andrew Trilogy | Survival Mode

Maggie Andrew

Dear Maggie,

I just wanted to say that a lot of emotions come up when I listen to your newest song, Survival Mode. It brings to mind my own personal experiences.

Listening to your lyrics, I’m sure it took a lot out of you to create this, just like it took a lot out of me when I listened to it. But that’s the beauty of human expression: it can unite millions of people from all walks of life.

Every once in a while I have a bad dream that makes me feel like I’m not good enough. And every single time, I believe that. Everyone close to me knows just how hard I am on myself, but if I didn’t have the sense to listen to others… I’d probably have no confidence to write this.

Your song helps me get out of bed and make the most of every day, even the shitty ones.

Thank you for everything you do and keep it up.

Survival Mode by Maggie Andrew Review

I have no real criticism for this magnificent Maggie Andrew trilogy, I am just honored to be able to share my thoughts on the piece. Below, I comment on each song in the trilogy, sharing snippets of memories that each song brought forth when I first listened to them.

Part 1: Honda Civic

This song is about leaving Maggie’s old past behind her in Nova Scotia as well as her ex-boyfriend who tried to hold her back from her dreams.

Me: When I started this blog, my ex-girlfriend didn’t think this would be healthy for me. She said that she wanted me to focus on my “real” passion, which to her was my career in mental health. Well, that turned out to be untrue as I have learned that I am able to focus on both my blog and career. And I mean, this is great and all, but it doesn’t mean I don’t think about her at least once a day…

Part 2: ILMIHM

This song doesn’t have a formal description, but I think I can try to summarize it in my own words.

Me: The first 3 words are “I Love Me”, symbolizing confidence and a sense of healthy pride in ones self. The last 3 words are “I Hate Myself”, which contradicts the first meaning. But at the same time, it’s exactly what is going on in the mind. For me, I know I am cool as **** but I still am never enough. At this moment, writing this article I think it might be the best piece I have ever written. Yet when I go back to edit it… I have a feeling it is not going to be good enough until I give up trying to impress myself.

Part 3: Survival Mode

I’ve been in a constant state of survival for as long as I can remember. Being alone in my own self-deprecating thoughts and traumatic experiences. Even though it’s sad, it’s comfortable being alone, I never want anybody to feel bad for me.

Maggie Andrew (Press Release)

Me: I relate to this because my past relationships still haunt me everyday. I’m allowing this to happen because to me it’s just how it is. My depressing thoughts linger and tell me that I’ll never be enough, and my anxiety makes me worry about every single word I say… But again, that’s just how it is. I don’t want to be alone for another 3 years, but if that happens, as Maggie’s lyrics demonstrate, I will be okay… Because that’s just how it is.

What’s Next for Maggie Andrew?

Let’s be honest, she just is going to continue coming out with great music… That’s really all that needs to be said.
